Grading to the Standards

Grading Policy

This is a STANDARDS BASED class:
What this means to you...

There are certain skills which must be learned to master Algebra.
These skills are called the COURSE STANDARDS.
All the points you earn will be for demonstrating that you have mastered a standard.
You MUST master all the standards to pass the course, period.

How it works...

You will be given a grade of one of the following on each assessment:

Advanced Proficient               Extends targeted grade level standards:  represents the student exceeding grade level expectations set by the state.  The student has a complete understanding of the standard and can reliably apply the skill to advanced problems.
Scores as 100%

Proficient                                Demonstrates proficiency of targeted grade level standards with evidence of application:  represents the student meeting the grade level expectations set by the state with evidence of application.
The student understands the standard and has some success applying the skill to advanced problems.
Scores as 92%

Basic                                      Demonstrates proficiency of targeted grade level standard: represents the student meeting the grade level expectations set by the state.
The student has an elementary understanding of the skill, but is unable to apply it to more advanced problems.
Scores as 83%

Reassessed Basic                   Demonstrates proficiency of targeted grade level standard after reassessment:
The student has an elementary understanding after reworking and reassessing the skill.
Scores as 74%

Not Proficient                         Insufficient performance of targeted grade level standards: indicates that the student's skill level is significantly below the grade level expectations set by the state.  The student does not have the necessary skills and concept understanding to be successful in the next quarter or math course.  The student is expected to correct all errors in that standard on the original test, to obtain and complete practice work related to that standard, and to reassess on the standard.
Scores as 0%

All students must reach the Basic Level on EVERY standard before receiving credit for a test.

Reassessment

Please note:  All students are required to follow these guidelines anytime a standard is not met.

  • Reassessment is the backbone of this class and what really makes learning take place.
  • Reassessment is required and is the norm for my class.

1.     A grade of Not Proficient is not acceptable, but grades are open for reassessment.  Any standard on a test which is below basic must be reassessed for a grade change.
Until every standard has been successfully reassessed, you will receive an incomplete for your grade in the standard that you received a Not Proficient.

2.     You are expected to reach Basic Level on EVERY standard on EVERY Unit Test.

3.     On any standard that you did not achieve Level 3, I will write comments to help guide you in successfully meeting the standard and you will complete the following:

In order to reassess, you are expected to:

a)     Have all homework up to date.

b)    Analyze and correct each problem which you got wrong in that standard.

 4.     Once you have successfully corrected your original errors and submitted all required work, you must come in before school, during your lunch, or after school to be reassessed on that standard.

 5.     If your reassessment is satisfactory, your grade in the standard(s) will be changed to a Reassessed Basic Level (74%) and you will receive the score you earned for all the other standards on that test.

6.     Until every standard has been successfully completed, all the standards on that test will show as incomplete and will be scored as a 0%.
